THE PETREL STATION TOUR REPORT

Another great spring day out on the latest pelagic seabird tour to The Petrel Station, offshore from Tutukaka (in Northland, New Zealand).

In total we recorded 25 seabird species, and just over 85,000 stunning seabirds! See the full species list below. Conditions on the day were mostly overcast fine, with very light 2-7 knot winds and a 0.5m swell.

  • 21,500 x Buller's Shearwater

  • 15,000 x Fluttering Shearwater

  • 58 x Little Shearwater

  • 38 x Flesh-footed Shearwater

  • 13 x Sooty Shearwater

  • 16 x White-faced Storm Petrel

  • 7 x New Zealand Storm Petrel

  • 1 x Wilson's Storm Petrel

  • 240 x Common Diving Petrel

  • 6 x Little Blue Penguin

  • 2,250 x Australasian Gannet

  • 4 x White-fronted Tern

  • 700 x Red-billed Gull

  • 8 x Black-backed Gull

  • 69 x Pied Shag

  • 2 x Little Black Shag

Other marine life encountered:

  • 1 x Sunfish

  • 9 x NZ Fur Seal
